Answer preview
The Nazis engaged in human herding, whereby an individual had to get a number as an identification tag, rather than their names. German forces would more often than not find Jews, arrest, detain them, and then lock them up in concentration camps (Marriot 1). Once a person finds themselves in such facilities, they would get branded as a means of identification. Branding them and forcing most of the captured Jews to stop using their names was another form of dehumanization. A person’s name is more often than not the source of their identity. Without a name tracing, a person’s history will become hectic, which might be the reason why there are few recorded histories of the Jews held as captives during the Holocaust.
