Social Problems Application Paper
One of the primary objectives in this course is to examine the reciprocal relationship between Hip Hop culture and the broader American society. More specifically, we have been looking at the ways in which Hip Hop has affected society, as well as the ways in which society has influenced Hip Hop Culture. For this paper assignment, you will select a social problem and provide a critical analysis of its relationship with Hip Hop.
Part One – Research and describe the social problem.
First select a social problem that is of interest to you. A social problem can be described as “an aspect of society that people are concerned about and would like changed” (Henslin 2003). Begin your paper with an overview of the social problem. You must provide substantial evidence to demonstrate that the social problem is a significant societal concern. Provide evidence through statistics, empirical data, studies, examples of claims making, etc. (Claims making is a process of convincing the public that a particular issue or situation should be defined as a social problem.)
Part Two – How has the social problem influenced Hip Hop Culture?
Describe how the social problem is reflected in Hip Hop Culture. What type of messages do you find about this problem in Hip Hop? Provide evidence and specific examples.
Part Three – How has Hip Hop Culture influenced the social problem?
Have the messages presented through Hip Hop had a positive or negative impact on the social problem (or perhaps maybe no impact at all)? For example, have these messages brought awareness to the social problem or have they reinforced stereotypes and ultimately exacerbated the problem. Have the messages led to media attention, governmental policies, congressional hearings, or program creation? Provide evidence and specific examples.
Part Four – Can Hip Hop help to solve the social problem?
Can Hip Hop Culture be leveraged to improve the social problem? How? Would you recommend promoting change through artists’ messages, political actions, social movements, or changes to current policies or laws? Provide specific examples.
