QUALITATIVE research workshop

Week 4 Workshop: Qualitative Research Workshop

In this week’s Workshop, visit your unique thread and carefully review how your research problem and purpose have evolved and what you have learned about the different approaches.

By Day 3

Post a response to the following prompts:

  • Present your research question as two or three versions, based on the different approaches you have explored that seem most appropriate to your research problem and purpose.
  • Make a case for why each approach would work.
  • Identify the approach you believe best fits your research question. Then, re-formulate the question based on the approach you selected.
  • Describe how the approach you selected will direct the procedures you will later develop.
  • Summarize your choice of theoretical framework for your prospectus. Justify how your choice aligns with your current choice of research question and approach. If they are not aligned, choose a more appropriate framework.
  • Given your choice of approach, describe what data collection tools will be most appropriate to consider. Note: This is not a commitment to use all of the tools you identify; rather, it is meant to be a reflection on what is possible given your choice of approach.

This is my research problem and purpose Qualitative Research Workshop

The success of research depends on the researcher’s ability to come up with a valid research topic that may address the issue at hand (Laureate education, 2016). The healthcare sector is one of the most sensitive departments that calls for high qualification of the practitioners. The department further requires the practitioners to have high-level skills that can help in addressing the health issue that the members of the respective community may face. However, nurse ratio is a significant issue that hinders service delivery in the healthcare department. The reduction in some nurses required for effective service delivery arises from the ever-increasing number of patients as well as the restrictions in the hiring process that results in the various healthcare facilities hiring few nurses.

The ever-increasing number of patients in the various healthcare organizations poses a great challenge for the reduced number of nurses serving in these organizations to address. This problem gets aggravated by the fact that the number of nurses in the labor market has decreased over the years, as nursing is among the highest vocational jobs and requires the students to invest a long time in increasing their knowledge before actually entering the labor market (Sare & Ogilvie, 2010). This increased number of patients and the lower number of nurses to look after them has resulted in the fact that there is a lack of sufficient nurses to take care of these patients with a high-quality level standard. In this sense, as the number of patients received attention after by the different nurses increase, the quality of the service provided to each of these patients decreases (Singh, 2009).

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of the lack of enough nurses influences the quality of the services rendered to the patients. The study will also assess the approaches that can help to address this issue by developing different strategies with which to optimize the performance of these nurses despite the fact of having to look after an increasing number of patients as part of their daily routine duties (Kutney-Lee et al., 2015).

The research questions involved in the selected topic include:

  • What are the variables that affect the healthcare quality other than the available time of the nurses to look after each of the patients under their direct care?
  • What can the healthcare institutions do to improve the quality of care without hiring more nurses considering how the number of patients will likely increase in the future as the population keeps growing?
  • How does this issue affect the nurses’ satisfaction and withdrawal rate?
  • What can the healthcare department do to mitigate this issue?

Answer preview

The success of research depends on the researchers’ ability to come up with the appropriate research questions to address the identified issue. According to Kutney-Lee, Stimpfel, Sloane, Cimiotti, Quinn, & Aiken, (2015), the health care sector requires highly qualified health practitioners with the competence to identify the issues bothering the community health.  The health care sector is faced with the shortage of health practitioners especially the nurses. Sare & Ogilvie (2010), posit that the number of patients is ever increasing in thus outmatching the number of nurses.  However, it’s important to find the right approaches which can be applied to address the shortage of nurse practitioners and improve the workability of the available nurses.   The qualitative approaches that can be applied in this research include phenomenology and grounded theory.

Research Questions

The research questions that can apply in this research are as follows.
