The article for this assignment is “Want to Reduce the Number of People in Prison? Stop Sentencing So Many People to Prison.” by Steven Graves and Garry Bliss. The main idea for this article is the reduction of convictions. I settled on this article for many reasons. One is that it is about the budgets made in California for the criminal justice system. The authors say that California spends more than $20 billion every year on incarcerations and responding to crimes. This amount of money is a lot for such purposes since there are other sectors which can greatly benefit from such amount. That money can be channeled into improving services such as affordable housing, childcare, and provide support to services that make efforts to keep people away from the criminal justice system (Graves & Bliss, 2018).
Another reason is that there are ongoing changes which in the long run will improve California’s criminal justice system. The changes include the approval by the Governor and legislators in 2011 to transfer the responsibility of and funding of young convicted adults from the states to the counties.
