Systems Development Life Cycle
Role of the Nurse informaticist in systems development and implementation
Assignment
- Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and reflect on the scenario presented.
- Consider the benefits and challenges associated with involving a nurse leader on an implementation team for health information technology.
2-3 pages
In preparation of filling this role, develop a 2- to 3-page role description for a graduate-level nurse to guide his/her participation on the implementation team. The role description should be based on the SDLC stages and tasks and should clearly define how this individual will participate in and impact each of the following steps:
- Planning and requirements definition
- Analysis
- Design of the new system
- Implementation
- Post-implementation support

Answer previewThe role of a systems development life cycle is to create necessary change in an organization such as a healthcare facility. The contribution of nurses is critical in the development of an effective information technology system. A nurse can participate in each of the five steps contained in the life cycle. In the first step, planning, a nurse assesses the needs that the system should address (Ammenwerth, Gräber, Herrmann, Bürkle & König, 2003). During preparation, a nurse should highlight the failings attributed to paper records. The nurse can provide requirements that reduce the time spent in clinical documentation. In the analysis stage, the nurse breaks down the elements and assists in defining the functional ones. During analysis, a nurse can also specify which of the stated requirements best fit the information system under development (Ammenwerth et al., 2003). During the design of the new system,…
