Many people perceive air travel as the safest mode of transport compared to other forms of travel such as road, sea, and rail. The main reason for this revolves around the fact that accidents involving commercial airplanes are pretty rare. Even though this might be the case, when these accidents do eventually happen, the impacts are enormous in comparison with the other forms of transport, in light of the high casualty rate witnessed in air travel accidents. As such, this paper will analyze an airplane accident, specifically American Airlines Flight 587. The following section will give a brief description of the accident, followed by another section focusing on the causes of the accident as enunciated by the NTSB accident report and post-accident information provided by the FAA pertaining to this accident. The subsequent sections will highlight and discuss two themes derived from the class textbook related to American Airlines Flight 587’s accident.
