Answer preview
Over time, making the right decisions about healthcare provided during the end of life has proved to be more complicated, with disparities on the best approach that physicians should take. Some argue that patients have a right to a dignified death, which includes euthanasia and physician assisted suicide (E&PAS). Proponents argue that measures like artificial nutrition and hydration seldom accords patients with chronic diseases of consciousness the ‘dignity’ of human life. This is because they are denied the right to a dignified death. Carstens (2021) believes that when faced with chronic diseases which threaten to incapacitate the patients, then they need to choose how they die before incapacitation. He recommends the choice be based on whether they are willing to live through the discomfort caused by their illness or would prefer to die once their death is proved as medically inevitable. However, there is a general concern that E&PAS can create a slippery slope where it is used even when unnecessary, for instance, when there are other end-of-life treatments that could work in their favor or out of physicians’ abuse of their positions. An incorporation of the patient’s wishes, diagnosis, and prognosis when passing legislation helps avoid unnecessary use. The support for E&PAS is primarily founded on the rationale that life-sustaining measures for dying patients make them suffer for longer by delaying their inevitable deaths.
