- Can law be used to challenge deep-seated social problems and achieve meaningful social change? First, using course materials, (1) choose one social problem that you would like to focus on. Tell us about this problem, and why you see it as a problem. Second, using course materials, please explain how you would (2) define “meaningful social change.” This can take up reform and/or abolitionist frameworks. Third, using course materials, (3) explain why or why not you believe that law can be used successfully toward attaining your vision of social change.

American society is riddled with numerous societal problems. One such problem is the mass incarceration of African Americans. The United States is amongst the countries with the highest number of incarcerated persons. A substantial portion of this population are African Americans, who have over the years found themselves increasingly interacting with the country’s criminal justice system and correctional system (Sawyer & Wagner, 2020). The question of whether the law can be used as a tool to effect social change has elicited intensive debate. Despite this, abolishing the country’s prisons and jails is the best and most effective approach to dealing with this societal problem
