A research topic uncovers the problem that researchers in the community or any other field that they want to address. In this case, my research topic will be “the impact of the job stress and burnout on medical errors among nurses.” ‘Medical errors’ issue is a significant subject addressed by numerous researchers, mainly due to their increasing medical cost. The growing level of medical errors in the country interferes with the national goals of improving healthcare services. By definition, medical errors entail failure in the treatment, which eventually causes great harm to the patients. Medical errors in the country contribute to many deaths, whereas most people are left with irreversible disabilities like amputations and others. Medical errors have devastating events to the health care organization, and their impacts are long-lasting. The study of the causes of the medical errors remains the subject of focus, with researchers alluding that inadequate training and lack of relevant skills are among the cause. Another cause discussed by most of the researchers is stress and job burnout among the nurses.
According to the research undertaken by the University of Chicago in 2018, 21% of the patients report cases related to medical error every year. According to MacDorman, Declercq, & Thoma (2018), medical errors in the United States cost about 251,454 lives every year. A medical error is ranked the third cause of death in the country (MacDorman, Declercq, & Thoma, 2018). Medical errors have long-lasting effects on the patients, healthcare organizations, as well as to the government. According to Koehn, Ebright, & Draucker (2016), medical errors interfere with the patient’s emotional, physical health, family relationships, and financial wellbeing.
