Muckrakers were investigative journalists who exposed corruption in business or government, or examined serious societal issues. Several of the most well-known muckrakers worked for McClure’s Magazine , where they wrote exposés on large companies, meat slaughtering houses, and city governments. These prominent and influential reporters included Ida M. Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens, Upton Sinclair, and Ray Stannard Baker.

1.  Write a well-constructed article on one muckraker. (Ida M. Tarbell) Keep the following points in mind as you write your essay:

·  Include important biographical information about the individual’s life.

·  Give specific examples of articles and books that were written. What businesses or government offices were targeted in the exposés?

·  What reforms or changes took place as a result of the individual’s writings?

According to Bausum (2007), Ida M. Tarbell was an American journalist who was born in 1857 and died in 1944.she was born in a rich family because her father was an oil producer and from this experience she had the chance to write about the oil industry and some of the challenges and ethical issues involved in this industry.  She joined high school and later joined college where she studied biology but had interest in writing. She first started as a teacher but later quit her work so as to concentrate in writing. As a teacher she taught subjects and courses such as botany, biology, geometry and other languages…
