German prisons are organized around central tenets of rehabilitation and resocialization compared to the American system. In contrast, the U.S system is based on incapacitation and retribution, which excludes them from the benefits available to mainstream society after their release. That makes many people released from prison commit more crimes leading them back to prison (60 Minutes, 2019). For instance, in German prisons, every member has a key to their cells to give them privacy, just like any other normal human being. Also, Germany relies mostly on fines and community-based sentencing and not prison sentencing. That is why many German prisons are not crowded. Unlike the U.S, some people have spent years in prison awaiting trial, and that’s why prisons are overcrowded with no leisure time. Separating prisoners from their family members is traumatizing already, and therefore, German prisons try as much as possible to make them feel at home.
