Briefly introduce a person you have recently cared for in your nursing practice. (Be sure not to include any identifying information that would be protected by HIPAA!) Discuss the person’s view of the cause of their health condition, the person’s health literacy, and the person’s identity on the continuum of privilege-disadvantage (Table 4 in the Lor article on p. 361). What was (or would be) your approach to care for him/her in a culturally competent way?

Answer preview
I have worked as a case manager alongside medical students in the past few months. In my line of duty, I met a male patient suffering from obesity, high blood pressure, and Hepatitis C. The patient had no idea how he got these diseases. I could also tell that he was ignorant about healthy eating as his response to healthy and unhealthy diets was shocking (Østensen, Bragstad, Hardiker, & Hellesø, 2019). Unfortunately, the patient was unaware of reading, writing, and understanding content, so his health illiteracy was understandable. The patient’s literacy on his health was so limited. Therefore, as a health practitioner, I had to take the necessary meaningful action to help him. In a culturally competent manner, I took enough time to talk to this patient and discuss in length his health and eating habits and how they can impact his future and the people around him.
