(1000 – 1250 words): Students compose an essay outlining their position, attitude or intention towards the specified topic. The student’s position must be clearly identified, discussed and supported with evidence from reliable sources. The student must take a position that applies belief and reasoning systems to concepts of ethics and/or knowledge (DBR 200.1) and applies said systems of knowledge and/or ethics to issues in society, history, faith, spirituality, and/or one’s own life from a global perspective (DBR 200.2).

So-for this specific assignment-students will use one of the first three discussion topics as described generally below: (Discussion Four to make an argument about the ethics of using AI’s to supplement/replace human friendships!)

The advancement of technology is likely to change our social experience as technologists advance robot friends. The truth is these ‘new’ friends can only fake emotions and behaviors and thus cannot perfectly enhance an experience of a good life or guarantee societal wellbeing. While they can perfectly fulfill some important friendship roles, including companionship and invaluable assistance, it is most at the position of a servant and not a friend (Danaher, 2019). To be perfect friends, emotions are significant, being good and alike in virtue, each wishing the other qua good and to delight in each other (Ross, ca. 350 B.C.E./2018, p. 174-175). Indeed based on Aristotelian ethics, it is impossible to be friends with many people in the sense of perfect friendship. Yet, the AI offers equal companion and assistance to the majority of technology users, at the same time, especially when it concerns the Chatbots.
