Sukarno was a revolutionary and a stateman in Indonesia, serving from 1945 to 1967. He led Indonesia into independence from the Dutch colonialists and became the first president that year. He also resisted the re-colonization of the Dutch, and he founded the Indonesian National Party, which seemed unique as he was educated and had not gone to the Netherlands to study where most Native people and current-day Indonesians go to study (Lecture notes, p.6). Sukarno’s uniqueness made him strong enough to create a sense of unification in all areas under the Indonesian name. He is also a significant figure because he took the leading role in the nationalism movement in the 1920s, which led to Indonesian independence in the 1940s. Even though he was arrested and forced out of the political scene, he left a history.
