Criminology is a fascinating area of study as it delves into criminals’ world and examines different factors that influence their tendencies. The discipline addresses the psychology of crime and explores people’s motivations to commit heinous acts. Conventionally, society has exhibited a great fascination with criminals, and members of the public never shy away from speculations whenever any curious criminal activity occurs. Such interests subsist even long after the incidents occurred, regardless of whether they were resolved or not. Many consider art a window into society’s soul, and artists are deemed to hold a mirror for society to evaluate itself and reflect on core issues. These forms range from pictures and drawings to film. Serial killings have long tormented Western society’s conscience, and it is no surprise that numerous documentaries have been dedicated to demystifying the mystery surrounding the perpetrators of these heinous acts. Fascination with these characters extends beyond their localities or nations to the entire globe. It is rather common to find people in one country discussing serial murders in other jurisdictions. This paper discusses the depictions in a 2005 documentary titled Unmasking Jack the Ripper and analyzes its subject from a criminology perspective. It argues that Jack the Ripper exhibited the tendencies that criminology experts have expected of serial killers
