The rate at which the human population is currently growing is far higher than it was thousands of years ago. The drastic increase in the population growth rate was first recorded after the development of agriculture. As of 2011, the world population had grown to over seven billion people, and the rate of growth was projected at 2.6 newborn babies every second (Haldane & Toman, 2015).
