African Immigrant in America
You will choose a specific culture or ethnicity of an immigrant or refugee population and research their cultural norms as they relate to the healthcare offered in their home country (AFRICANS). How do the health care options in their home country differ from the healthcare options offered here in the United States? There are two basic models when it comes to health care program design. The first one is the community-based approach. “There are five levels of focus in community engagement: the individual, the social and network systems, the influences of organizations to bring change, the community collaborative relationships, and the state and federal policies and regulations” (Burkholder & Nash, 2013, Section 10.1, para. 1). This model takes into consideration that a person recovers better in a supportive environment filled with friends and family. The second model is the market-oriented approach. Market orientation is part of our capitalist free market economy. This recognizes health services as a business providing a product. A customer with a health problem usually does not take the time to shop around for a doctor, so these services are provided at a premium cost in critical time. Insurance providers compete for business between doctors and patients. So basically, the free market economy drives supply and demand. This leaves health care consumers at a big disadvantage, particularly in more sparsely populated areas where health care providers are few and far between. “Even if the health care system is part of the free market economy, governments have an interest in ensuring affordable access to all citizens for two reasons: (1) Federal and state governments fund public payer insurance plans, and (2) an unhealthy population costs the country money“ (Burkholder & Nash, 2013, Section 10.2, para. 2).
- Analyze their cultural and social norms.
- Discuss how they experience the healthcare system in America.
- Include an evaluation of how both the community and market-oriented approaches to health care, can assist your chosen culture in getting the care they need. Provide an analysis of a multidisciplinary approach that can be used to deliver the best care to your population.
- Discuss a program in your community, or the nearest large community, that serves immigrants and refugees. Are the services truly accessible to a wide population of immigrants and refugees? Identify one approach which could improve accessibility, cost, or the quality of care for the population.
