The number of older adults in our society today is significant as compared to decades before. This calls for a new awakening in different sectors that serve the elderly including the health or medical sector. The article describes ageism as a term that goes back decades ago to 1968. According to Chamberlain, Sand, Quinn & Pine (2019), the term ageism was created by Robert Butler to refer to the discrimination faced by elderly persons in society. The term originated following numerous stereotypes and mistreatment towards older persons in society by the younger populations. Ageism can cause physical, mental, emotional, and psychological harm to the elderly. Patients who have a positive outlook on aging live longer by 7.5% compared to those with a negative outlook (Chamberlain et al., 2019). Ageism causes the person to feel like a burden which can make them depressed and isolated. Physicians can also dismiss their symptoms as a normal part of aging, leading to deteriorating health.
