Sense-making is a strategy utilized in organizations to help employees have a plausible understanding of concepts, plans, projects, among other activities leaders project to implement to enhance performance. In Nike’s case study, Diamond Arm (n.d.) informs that the management experienced tremendous growth and success due to adopting a rational perspective in goal setting and coordination in pursuit of attaining a high level of formalization. When the founders launched the company in 1964, these early years to the1990s were challenging due to a lack of concise goals and formalization of decisions and processes (Diamond Arm, n.d.). These issues affected the profitability of the company and the ability to attain a competitive advantage. Hence, from 1995 to 2003, the organization started moving towards a change approach of a rational system to redefine the firm’s strategy. The company created a new management team that designed a matrix structure that entails managerial responsibilities and specified organizational goals.
