Registered nurses (RN) are the largest group of healthcare professionals and remain predominantly non-Hispanic white. The challenge has existed for a long in Canada, and in 1990 it was dramatically highlighted as a major concern (Gupta, 1996). Seven black nurses from Northwestern General Hospital in Toronto filed a complaint on racial harassment. In the post-war industrial and baby boom period, black immigrant nurses from the Caribbean were only accepted as permanent settlers when their qualifications exceeded those of the white nurses (Newton, 2017). Although the Ontario Human Rights Commission promoted the need to oversee antidiscriminatory programs, black nurses’ career development remains a great challenge. In the education setting, black nurses experience discrimination that affects professional development (Newton, 2017).  Historically some stereotypes held were that black women do not possess the traits of true womanhood important for the nursing profession (Jefferies, 2020, May 11).
