When he goes into the bushes to finish off the wounded buffalo, she shoots him with a rifle in the back of his head, immediately killing him. Wilson opines that she intended to murder her husband because she knew he would no longer put up with her. The theme of this story is masculinity. Francis is portrayed as weak, cowardly, and subservient to his wife. On the other hand, Wilson is the ideal man as he is courageous, rugged, and an outdoorsman. In the end, Francis experiences his emancipation and becomes a man. It is, however, short-lived because he dies soon after, hence the title of the story.
