Every child needs someone who believes in them. As an educator, you are in a unique position to both identify and understand the individual needs of a student. However, advocating for what’s best for a student is not only a teacher’s responsibility, it is shared among parents, caregivers, other professionals, and the student themselves. This assignment is meant for you to determine definitions, descriptions, and best practice tips for advocacy in special education.

Advocacy involves supporting and enabling a group of people to access the information and services, defend their rights and responsibilities.  In other words, it consists of speaking on behalf of another group. In this case, special education advocacy helps students with special needs to learn. Special education was established to meet changes in the behavioral, physical, and mental conditions of different children in the world. Special education came into existence in the last five decades.  Special education is a special type of education provided to children with special needs or disabilities. It has specialized instructions designed to meet their needs and offer them an opportunity to nurture their full potential.  Advocacy in special education entails empowering families of and children with special needs.
