In as much as the current situation is far from the ideal, the pandemic has provided useful insights into the working of the government. For all of President Trump’s assertion that the federal government has extensive powers, it is clear that the checks and balances envisaged by the founding fathers while opting for federalism has come into play. Whereas the federal government may not approve of the state governments’ decision to lock down their states, the decision to lift those restrictions lies solely in the hands of governors and not the federal government (Olson, 2020). However, one must appreciate that this is not a one-sided affair that is skewed in favor of the state governments as governors also have to lobby the federal executive to obtain funds for particular interventions or measures.
