Chinese philosophy of “gerontocracy,”

Module 6 Discussion Forum 2

Do you believe there is a possibility the “West” may embrace the traditional Chinese philosophy of “gerontocracy,” and offer greater value to those who have reached and are living in the late adulthood stage of development? Do you have suggestions for how to advocate for this? How do you think our culture could benefit from this, if you believe it could?

Answer preview

The United States is a young country amongst the advanced countries with many prominent people being the youth compared to other countries like Japan, Canada, or Italy (Berton et al., 2017). However, politicians in the country are older, majority 60years and above. I believe the West will adopt the Chinese gerontocracy with time, bringing a greater value to those living in the late stages of adulthood because the older generation is overpowering the young generation from the ruling. According to research, many youths born between 1981-1996 lost their jobs, and others got half paid during the Covid-19, which amounts to 40percent compared to the older people born between 1946 and 1964; only 25percent lost their jobs. Hence no senior politician is coming up with job solutions for the youth. It shows how much they are passing information and the ruling ladder to their fellow elders.
