For Kelly and her family, the primary reason they are experiencing the hardships they are currently facing revolves around the fact that they are still comparing the life they had in America to their new one. Doing this gets in the way of them adjusting to life in Tokyo since it prevents them from being open to a new way of doing this. As such, the key to overcoming, adjusting, and finally accepting their new life is to put their American way of doing things at the back of their minds and then open themselves up to learning new things (Kingsley, 2018). To do this, they will have to familiarize themselves with Japanese culture, which will entail reading about it and interacting with the locals and learning more about their way of life.
