My artifact of choice is De Espanol, Y Negra Mulato. This is a painting of the scale of dimensions 20 inches by 15.5 inches painted in 1775 through the media, oil on canvas. Francisco Clapera, a Spanish painter who worked in Mexico created this casta painting to portray cultural and social perceptions about mixed races. According to Katzew (2005), a casta painting in this case in one that portrays socio-racial classes which the Spanish government used to describe people from mixed racial backgrounds.
