To Prepare:

  • Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and reflect on the scenario presented.
  • Consider the benefits and challenges associated with involving a nurse leader on an implementation team for health information technology.

The Assignment: (2-3 pages not including the title and reference page)

In preparation of filling this role, develop a 2- to 3-page role description for a graduate-level nurse to guide his/her participation on the implementation team. The role description should be based on the SDLC stages and tasks and should clearly define how this individual will participate in and impact each of the following steps:

Answer preview

Having an informatics savvy health organization is crucial in the delivery of quality health services. Nurses have a role in ensuring that step-to-step implementation measures in health informatics are put in place (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). When looking at the systems development life cycle (SDLC), this model enables health organizations to meet and exceed customers’ expectations by enhancing work measures, time, and healthcare costs (Qin et al., 2017). The involvement of graduate-level nurses in the planning, analysis, design process of the new system, implementation, and post-implementation impacts each phase.

The first step in the SDLC is planning and requirements definition, which requires the health informatics support team to identify problems in the working environment. In this stage, the graduate nurse should help the team gather information from the people they interact with, including patients, family members, and coworkers, about technical and clinical issues (AHRQ, n.d.). This allows the team to identify assurance requirements and define risks likely to affect
