It looks at social capital in America for the past several decades and the elements that have constituted the nature of social capital. The author discusses social capital according to famous theorists such as Bourdieu, Coleman, Robert Putnam, among others and he critiques Putnam’s theory of social capital. Putnam describes social capital as the social networks existing among a group of people as well as the norms of reciprocity and the trust among those people. His theory assures social capital as a critical constituent of democracy and community development.
