The United States does not have universal health care coverage, but various attempts towards universal coverage have been made. Health care costs remain uncontrolled, and in 2019, the rate of uninsured people was 12.1%. The country has been on the verge of healthcare reforms that have failed, in the past years. In the 1900s, National Health Insurance (NHI) proposals paved the way, but the ideas were not strong enough, raising opposition and ineffectively campaigning for the healthcare reforms. The reforms include NHI and the new deal 1934- 1939, President Roosevelt’s committee report on old age, unemployment issues, healthcare, and health insurance. The NHI was left out of the social security bill, and an opposing AMA led to failed attempts.
