Question Description: Since 1945, Americans have been debating the necessity of dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. Some historians argue that dropping the bombs ended the war, saved American and Japanese lives, and avoided an invasion of Japan. Other historians believe Japan would likely have surrendered without the use of the bombs. After reading the text , answer the following questions in your discussion posts: Of all the options facing the United States, which one should Truman have pursued? Was the United States justified in dropping the bombs on Japan? Why or why not? Did the United States fully understand the weapons before using them? Fully explain your answers.

Answer preview

Considering the options that Truman was exposed to, the best alternative to have pursued was demonstrating the atomic bomb on an unpopulated area in Japan. This alternative would frighten Japan and compel them to surrender without a fight. Targeting an island in Japan would illustrate the atomic bomb’s power and its effects on the population (Dodge, 2017). A technical demonstration of the use of the atomic bomb would have caused Japan to rethink its decision to retreat from war. However, based on these readings, an interesting question is raised, would this encourage Japan to fight harder? This question is inevitable in this option because, despite the firebombing in Tokyo that almost destroyed the city, Japan was resistant to surrender.
