The first statute aimed at regulating and controlling drugs including opium and cocaine was the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. It prohibited the production, use, and transfer of such drugs by imposing fines and imprisonment penalties. The 1909 Smoking Opium Exclusion Act, which was followed by the Harrison Act of 1914, which become the first law illegalizing the non-medical use of opium. In the year 1919, the Supreme Court ratified and made a few alterations to the Harrison Act. In 1922, Narcotic Drug Import and Export Act was for the regulation of drug importation and exportation which was matched by the 1932 Uniform State Narcotic Act. The 1927 Bureau of Prohibition was created to look into organized crime leaders. The Boggs Act, 1951 made maximum criminal penalties for drug-related crimes and was increased by the 1956 Narcotics Control Act. The 1970 Controlled Substance Act consolidated the numerous drug laws. There was Narcotic Addict Treatment Act of 1974 which provided for rehabilitation couple with the Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000. Then there is the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 amending the Controlled Substance Act.
