The social network sites have spread globally thus increasing their popularity over the years. This is attributed by the fact that since 2006 to 2008 social network sites such as My Space has grown from 66 million to 117 million visitors while Facebook has also grown from 14 million to 132 million visitors. Such sites focus on building and maintaining social networks which are usually either open or semi-open systems. These sites allow any individual to join by new members registering and creating their online profiles which entail self-descriptions and friend requests from other members as well as reacting to their profiles. The article by Antheunis, Valkenburg, & Peter, (2010) which talks about getting acquainted with social networks is mainly about testing a model which involves online uncertainty reduction and social attraction. The article explores the uncertain reduction strategies used by members of a social network site in order to obtain information concerning an individual they had recently met online in a particular site. The article is based on a survey it carried out which involved 704 persons on their use of social network sites.(1117words)
