According to the institute of medicine, evidence-based guidelines, also referred to as clinical practice guidelines are carefully developed statements which serve to guide medical practitioners as well patients in matters concerning appropriate healthcare for certain medical issues (Mak V. Boswell, 2012). These guidelines can, however, be used by the practitioners in question as a means of avoiding a successful lawsuit against them. This has affected the standard of care provided in most of the hospitals, as discussed below.
