Family Nurse Practitioner Practicum Experience
The practicum experience helps to increase knowledge and skills learned in previous courses. It creates an atmosphere to apply evidence-based concepts of disease management to patient care plans. Sharing of practicum experiences with classmates will increase knowledge of most common illnesses treated in different practicum settings. Continue to ask questions of your preceptor and examine rationales for prioritizing diagnoses and prescribing medications.

I am at a general practice clinic. The number of patients often varies from day to day, but I mostly serve 8 patients, and my preceptor sees about 20 patients. Diabetes, hypertension, and the common cold were the most commonly diagnosed illnesses. The majority of the patients treated at the facility were Hispanics with a high rate of diabetes and hypertension. Most of the patients came to the clinic with complaints of fatigue, thirst, headaches, blurred vision, and tingling hands, which were all common symptoms of diabetes and hypertension and required close follow-up and monitoring.
