During the 1950’s and 1960’s, female pop music groups became wildly popular with American teenagers. How did the music of “girl groups” help to support feminism for young women of the time? In the 1950s and 1960s, girl groups changed the perception that people and the entire community had towards feminism. They achieved this by developing a greater and broader spectrum of female vocal artists who were not appreciated during this era. Therefore, feminism was promoted by allowing female music groups of all types, such as quirky pop, gospel, rhythm, and blues to be inclusive of all female musicians. Although the idea of female rock stars sounded great, they were treated differently compared to male groups. This is because girl groups during the 1950s and 1960s experience challenges in producing their own music, accessing royalties which were limited to them and minimal financial compensation (Warwick, 2013).
