Discussion Question 2

Is it an effective technique that in Glaspell’s “Trifles,” Mrs. Wright is the central focus of the play but never appears on stage herself?

Answer preview

Besides, the play challenges my views about marriages. In my culture, marriage is another way of bringing people together apart from blood. Relationship by marriage is respected in all the families involved. For example, once individuals from two different families marry, other members from those two families should not marry. Otherwise, it is regarded as incest. In the play, Li’l Bit and Uncle Peck are related through marriage. However, they are having sexual relations that could not be allowed in my culture. Uncle Peck is even telling Li’l Bit that he will marry her when she reaches 18 years old (Vogel, 2018). This is incest in that people, who are related by blood or marriage, should not have sexual relations.
