Answer preview

Quality in health care is fundamental to its operations and should be maintained so that the quadruple aim of health care is achieved. These aims include improving the health of individuals and the experience of patients, minimizing practitioner and staff burnout, and lowering the general cost of healthcare. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), some of the facets used in monitoring the quality of health care include mortality, readmissions, patient experience, the safety of care, effective use of medical imaging, the effectiveness of care, and timeliness of care (Cookson, Asaria, Ali, Shaw, Doran & Goldblatt, 2018).

Safety of care, for instance, can be used to monitor quality since it relates to medical mistakes. For example, the presence of hospital-acquired infections that come about because of viruses, bacteria, and pathogens can indicate failure to comply with certain medical standards and practices. Timeliness of care is also used to monitor quality, such that hospital emergency rooms that are crowded indicate failure on the part of practitioners, hence low quality of health care offered.
