This discussion prompt refers to the Pathways to Safer Opioid Use simulation.

After participating in the Pathways to Safer Opioid Use simulation exercise, reflect on the following.

Have you empowered a patient to believe they could make needed lifestyle modifications irrespective of the barriers that exist in their environment? Please provide examples. If so, you were engaged in health promotion activities as part of your nursing role.

Where there any strategies used in this simulation exercise that you use to improve patient health literacy? Are there any that you use that were not mentioned here? In your experience, how effective are these strategies?

What are some of the biggest challenges you encounter when trying to improve health literacy? What solutions can you offer to manage these challenges?

Discussion part 2

Choose two emerging populations, such as Latino/Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, or Black/African Americans. How do health issues differ between the two populations?

For this exercise, you will assume the role of Rhonda Clark, a registered nurse. In the scenario, you will make decisions as Rhonda and then witness the positive or negative consequences of those choices.

Every day we ask our patients to make good decisions for their health and well-being. In our work and throughout this course, we note that even small changes can have a profound impact on health promotion and disease prevention.

Keep in mind, it is appropriate here to make decisions that you may feel are “wrong” but “realistic.” A great deal can be learned by exploring negative consequences and outcomes.

Although the Hispanic Americans and the African Americans all considered minorities have challenges in the access to medical care receiving it have different outcome based on the ability to pay and preferences, differential treatment by caregivers and the geographic variability. Based on the 2009 statistics 79-percent of African Americans had health insurance coverage compared to 68-percent of the Hispanic. Concerning access to health care from the provider, the white American caregivers have a higher negative perception of the black Americans than the Hispanics. The key impressions are that the white caregivers are more likely to view the blacks as less likely to adhere to medical advice and to be higher in the abuse of drug as well as lack social support compared to Hispanic.
