Many people believe that God has to exist for people to receive justice. God is perceived as an impartial judge who rewards the morally upright by putting them in heaven while punishing the morally wrong by putting them in hell (Pritchard, 336). From this perspective, God is merely an executor of justice and plays a small role in giving life meaning. God is akin to Karma, who separates bad from the good and also distributes harm accordingly. If immortality did not give life a purpose, then God would have judged people in their lifetime. The argument perfect justice is only available in the afterlife has been used to support the claims that immortality is necessary for life to have a meaning. This statement has some truths because evildoers are rarely punished in their lifetime. Therefore, the issue is whether an eternal afterlife is necessary for perfect justice to be achieved.
