In-depth Case Study

In chapter 1 of Karmen’s “Crime Victims: An Introduction to Victimology” we are introduced to what victimologists do. There are four basic steps (p. 25-29) that he discusses that criminologists go through when looking at a situation:

Using these steps, and the information that you have read in the texts to complete a thorough case study on one of the criminal cases learned about in class (Do not use the case of Gary Leon Ridgeway, the Green River Killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, Edward Theodore (ED) Gein, American psycho, Dennis Lynn Rader, The “BTK” Stranger, Theodore Robert (Ted) Bundy).

In your case study, use the theories and ideas in victimology to identify, define, and describe the problem. Measure the real dimensions of the problem (e.g., explain the perpetrator’s actions), and specify how the victims were handled, as well as the criminal justice process (how evidence was gathered to test the hypotheses). Include the outcome of the prosecution, the victims, and their families.

Your paper must be formatted in the following manner:

  • The paper must be roughly three pages. Only the body of the paper counts towards the length. No information that belongs on a title page or reference page will count towards the length requirement.
  • Please follow APA guidelines; provide a title and reference page, use Times New Roman 12 point font, and double-space your lines. You need to have five references, two of which can be your textbooks from this class; the references for these can be found in the course syllabus.

Answer preview

The selected criminal case study selected among the criminal cases learned in class is that of Nannie Doss, famously known as the Giggling granny or the Black Widow (Hickey, 2013). She was an American serial killer who was held accountable for the deaths of 11 victims, including her four husbands, grandson, mother, mother-in-law, and her sister. However, research is conducted based on the steps followed by victimologists when studying criminal cases (Karmen, 2012). Based on the victimology research, criminal justice handled the victims of the perpetrator poorly and unjustly.

Identify, Define, and Describe the Problem

The childhood years experienced by Nannie Doss were not pleasant, which contributed to her mental instability. Her childhood was an unhappy one since the strict rules of his father ruled her. Therefore, she spent the majority…
