Currently, there is no definition or a set of elements that universally defines defamation. This has posed challenges to courts when dealing with cases resulting from defamation acts. Having a universal definition will lead to establishing universal laws that protect people’s reputations. Harming a person’s reputation is considered personal and a form of attack on someone; thus, it will be vital to have universal laws that describe the consequences of this act (Laidlaw & Young, 2019). This will mean that different countries will have a standard way of dealing with defamatory cases, and the consequences will also be the same. Universally justified laws will ensure that the interests of the public are well protected regardless of the country they are in, hence maintaining harmonious relations among nations.
