A false confession refers to a confession made by a person admitting been guilty of committing a crime while else the person did not perform that crime. There are several types of false confessions that is, instrumental coerced, instrumental voluntary, internalized coerced and internalized voluntary. Instrumental coerced this normally occurs due to long intense interrogations, the interviewee agrees to have committed the crime despite having not done it. The suspect is convinced that the only way they can be let go or get a better treatment is to confess. An example can be seen in the central park five cases where the five youths had confessed because they had been coerced and intimidated by the police officers.
