LGBT state policies and rights

Discussion

  1. Look through the Human Right’s Campaign’s map of state policies. We can see that gay marriage is legal in all states. Check out some of the other policies and compare different states. Why do you think that advocacy for LGBT rights are still important after the right to marriage has been won?

All states, including California, Illinois, and Columbia, allow second-parent adoption for same-sex partners. However, the gap in states that protect transgender persons on insurance coverage is broad. Alaska, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, and Wyoming are some states that exclude Medicaid coverage based on gender identity. The advocacy for LGBT rights is still essential despite success in marriage rights because the knowledge about this population is inadequate (Margolies, Joo, and McDavid, 2018). Therefore, advocating for their rights increases the institutional awareness of this group’s educational, health, and employment needs. Besides, although several states have adopted LGBT marriage rights, they are separate and unequal.
