During one of my shopping where I was accompanied by my friend, we came across some sales representatives who were advertising a new startup retail store. One of the representatives was very persuasive. He offered us a 10% discount on what we would purchase from the store. I was listening attentively because I wanted to evaluate whether the prices of some of the goods such as electronics and kitchenware were affordable compared to other retail stores I knew around. I, therefore, practiced evaluative listening since I was keen on assessing the credibility of the information we were being given. Evaluative listening also identified as critical listening, is where one is able to assess the truth or facts of what is being communicated. In this case, listening is not only an auditory act but it is also a visual act. The message the sales representative was trying to communicate is that the newest retail store in the area was the best option for our shopping spree. In this case, the sales representative was trying to persuade our way of thinking and also influence our shopping activity by giving us the option of a better place to purchase any household products. The main reasons that the representative gave were the store’s fair prices, quality commodities, and good customer service
