after the Prophet died. Tucker (1993) argues that these two women were able to play this vital role in the emergence and development of Islam due to the position and role women played in Islamic society during this time.

During this period, women had a recognized social standing and were allowed to hold property, evidenced by the immense wealth held by Khadija, which she used in the service of Islam. According to Tucker (1993), this position of women in Islamic society was also evident in Ottoman women. Tucker (1993) references the study done by Fanny Davis on the lives and activities of elite Ottoman women. For instance, women within the Sultan’s harim not only used various ways to acquire wealth but also used this wealth to construct buildings of social value such as Mosques, schools, fountains, and hospitals. These women relied on Islamic law to exert their influence in society (Tucker, 1993). Specifically, Islamic law provided women with property security, thereby granting them an absolute right to invest the property they acquired via bridal payments, inheritance, or gifts in income-generating activities (Tucker, 1993). By investing in these activities, the women grew their wealth and subsequently used it for good works such as funding the construction of social value buildings.
