From an economic perspective, the upper-middle class of the Norwegians had started flourishing due to the economic boom that began in 1843 and lasted till 1875 (Cron, 5). Factors such as the increase in foreign trade and the success in agricultural productivity and mining played a significant role in making Norway more industrialized. Consequently, the changes created more job opportunities and financial muscle in Norway. As seen in Helmer’s case, additional transformations were evident, whereby the upper-middle class became wealthier. In this sense, hard work spiked the upper-middle class up the ladder, which meant more elegance and wealth for the Helmer family following Torvald’s promotion at his workplace.
