In another dimension, the principle of beneficence- Do not harm was not used in the case of Henrietta Lacks. According to Dimaano, & Spigner, (2017), it is noted that the principle of beneficence in medical research encompasses the professional mandate to conduct valid and significant medical research with the aim to better serve and promote the welfare of the subjects. It should focus on the best interest of all involved including the subject or the participant, the researcher, and the society in general. In this case, the researchers and the community benefited a lot, but Henrietta and her family did not. The HeLa cells as they were named were important in confirming that the vaccine for polio was effective. This discovery has helped the eradication of polio incidences in the society. Besides the HeLa cells have been crucial in nuclear tests. Unfortunately, the Lacks family has not received any compensation thereby violating the ethical principle of beneficence.
