1. Some nurses believe that Florence Nightingale holds nursing back and represents the negative and backward elements of nursing. This view cites as evidence that Nightingale supported the subordination of nurses to physicians, opposed registration of nurses, and did not see mental health nurses as part of the profession. However, I think Nightingale’s suggestions are not valid in the 21st century. Today, nurses are required to participate in leadership, where they can make decisions about healthcare practices. For example, Masters (2020) refers to registered nurses as managers who have to perform care for themselves and direct other nurses. Therefore, nurses are no longer confined to the supervision of physicians, as suggested by Nightingale. I also think that healthcare services’ complexity caused by advances in technology and patterns of diseases has contributed to Nightingale’s ideas becoming irrelevant in modern healthcare. It is because nurses are required to perform more tasks than before (Cherry and Jacob, 2016).
