For decades mental illness was perceived as a shameful thing to have and diagnosis often resulted in a life of mistreatment and oppression for patients but that is not the case today. Many changes have occurred with the aim of humanizing treatment of persons with mental illness. In the 1900s patients were treated inhumanely when admitted in both private and public institutions.
