Answer preview

James Watson’s paper Looking Forward brings about a couple of ethical questions. The predominant question revolves around the value he attributes to people with disabilities. He believes that genetic testing will allow parents to learn whether their children have genes that predispose them to a particular disability that will adversely affect their lives (Smith, 2009). I do not support Watson’s point of view regarding disability. Persons with disabilities can become functional members of society if they get the necessary support they require.

  1. What was the underlying cause of John’s physical outbursts?

After John left the institution that cared for him for twenty years and moved into the Kennedy House, he started exhibiting physical outbursts. The most significant one was when he got into a fight with a fellow resident and ended up hurting him. His anger stemmed from the fact that people often saw him as a liability instead of an equal (Smith, 2009). During his discharge, he was under the illusion that people would not look down on him due to his mental retardation. However, in all homes he lived, the opposite happened. Fellow residents always saw him as a problem rather than a capable individual.
